Shannon Irwin BSN, RN

A little about me:

Hello Pirates! I graduated from the College of Nursing at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro AR with a Baccalaureate in Nursing. After graduating, my family and I moved back to Swansboro, NC. We had previously been stationed here before my husband retired from the Marine Corps. We bought a house then and kept it because we loved the area and knew we would eventually move back here one day. I have two children, a boy and a girl, who attend Swansboro schools. Once here in NC, I started working on the Medical/Surgical floor at Carteret Healthcare in Morehead City. I continue to work at the hospital on weekends and during the summer. I switched to be a fulltime school nurse so that I can have more time with my children by having similar schedules. I enjoy both bedside nursing and school nursing. It has been a pleasure taking care of your children.

Please note the following school health procedures as we work together to ensure a healthy, safe environment for all our students:

1. Medications: (prescription and over-the-counter) are not allowed at school unless an Onslow County Schools "Permission for Prescribed Medication…" form has been completed by both the parent and the doctor. This form can be obtained at school or on the Onslow County website. Use the following link: Permission for Prescribed Medication to Be Given During School Hours . The medication must be brought to the school by an adult; students may not transport medication. Prescription medication must be in the original pharmacy labeled container. Over the counter meds must match the permission form and be in an unopened container.

2. Sickness / Illness: As per Onslow County Schools Board Policy (4230.5), students with a fever 100° or greater, or with vomiting or diarrhea will be sent home and may not return until they are free of symptoms for 24 hours (without medication) before they may return to school.

3. Emergency Contact Information: It is essential that the nurse and the school have current emergency telephone numbers to ensure the parent/guardian will be notified in the event a student becomes ill or injured. Please update the school whenever contact information changes.

If you have any questions, please call Nurse Irwin at 910-326-3601 or email: Shannon.irwin@onslow.k12.nc.us.

Thank You!
