Hello Pirates! I wanted to let you know a little about my background and how I came to the school setting. I knew from the time I was five years old that I wanted to be a nurse. Of course, it took me a while to get the RN behind my name. I graduated from Eastern Kentucky University in May of 2000 with a Baccalaureate in Nursing. After graduating, I worked at my hometown hospital. My husband, a teacher, and I have two boys, one girl, one fur baby and many fish. We moved to North Carolina to have better teaching opportunities for my husband. I fell in love with this county. I was able to work at Onslow County Health Department and get to know the area and many of the people. I was able to connect and start to volunteer in the school system. I worked in the Intensive Care Unit on the weekends and loved being in the schools during the week. I realized I wanted to help these students attain their learning goals safely and I was directed to school nursing. Leaving the bedside was difficult, but in 2018 I was welcomed into the school system to work as a school nurse. It was an interesting start with Hurricaine Florence and COVID-19. These events have made me realize even more how much I love being a nurse. Each year that I am surrounded by incredible staff, students, and families encourages me to learn, have increased understanding and be more compassionate.
